Sam Mayall began farming at Pimhill in 1923. Sam’s son Roger took over in 1948 and decided to break with the convention at the time and avoid using artificial fertilisers and chemicals, becoming one of the first Organic farms in the UK. Roger wanted to farm more in line with nature and to create healthier soils.
Growing their own cereals and oats, the farm decided to invest in a traditional mill to process these cereals and oats on site, which enabled them to sell milled oats and flour, and to make oatcakes.
Today the farm and mill is run by Roger’s daughter, Ginny.
This oatcakes are made following a traditional recipe using wholemeal flour, groats, pinhead and medium oatmeal – all grown on the farm.
Combined with salted butter. they are baked in a wood-fired oven to give them a satisfy crunch and melt-in-the mouth texture.
